What even is Experiential Learning?
Experiential Learning is learning through an experience. Experiential learning provides a dynamic method for individuals to identify needed alterations in their skills, attitudes, and behaviours, enabling the application of these changes to improve performance.
Learning and the Kolb Cycle
Experiential Learning Model and Theory
David A. Kolb on Experiential Learning is a widely regard and famous model made of four elements: concrete experience, observation and reflection, the formation of abstract concepts and testing in new situations.
Experiential Learning Tools uses Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory and Cycle as a basis for all our experiential learning activities.
We design our experiential learning activities, tools, and resources based around this theory so you get the best learning out of your training.
Experience - 'Act/Do
The journey begins with action. Direct engagement in hands-on activities forms the foundation of experiential learning, immersing learners in the experience to gather unique insights and understanding.
Reflect - 'Notice and Observe'
Reflection is the bridge to deeper understanding. This stage emphasizes taking a step back to observe and think critically about the experiences, extracting valuable lessons and insights.
Conclude - 'Understand'
Understanding crystallizes from reflection. At this stage, learners synthesize their observations into coherent conclusions, developing new theories or models that encapsulate their learned experiences.
Apply - 'Test Conclusions'
The final stage of experiential learning involves applying the newly formed concepts and understanding in different contexts or real-world scenarios, testing the efficacy of the conclusions and further refining the learning process.
Beyond Traditional Learning
-
Engage learners
- Traditional education often focuses on memorization and passive learning. In contrast, experiential learning engages learners in critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making in real-life scenarios.
-
Modern approach to learning
- Experiential learning equips learners with essential life skills such as adaptability, collaboration, and resilience, preparing them for the challenges of the modern world.
-
Less theory, more practical
- Experiential Learning is characterised by less theoretical learning or lecturing and by more practical, personal learning that comes from the individual insights from those involved
